"Flu" Toll Up; Theatres Shut

HC urges private funerals for victims of malady. Increase in number of cases and request from Surgeon General, General Rupert Blue, result in closing all theatres, public schools, colleges, dance halls, and other public places. 861 cases in counties. Health D. reports 117 deaths in city from flu and pneumonia. 1322 new cases of flu for the 33 hours ending at 3 pm. 64 deaths and 180 new cases of flu and pneumonia at Camp Meade. 12 deaths and 20 new cases at Fort McHenry. 11 died at Edgewood with 14 new cases. 4 deaths and 60 new cases at Aberdeen. Cardinal Gibbons and Bishop Murray, acting on HC Blake's decision not to close church services, said that Sunday school would continue. HC Blake's order to close theaters effective today: "On account of the large number of cases of influenza now existing within the city of Baltimore, and its tendency to spread, and in order to guard the public health against its further introduction and spread, I, ... order ... all schools, within the limits of the City of Baltimore, also colleges, public, parochial and private, shall close and remain closed until further notice." Dr. C. Hampson Jones, Chief of the State Bureau of Communicable Diseases notified all county health officers of HC Blake's order and the need to comply with it. Large number of deaths in the city: 113 in one day (56 from flue, 21 pneumonia). The situation at Camp Meade seems to be improving in spite of the 64 deaths yesterday. Total deaths to date at the camp are 355. 180 new cases at the Camp yesterday (down from 1590 a week ago). 3 times more case released than admitted. The Camp bulletin showed that more than 10000 (1/4 of the camp) had been stricken with the flu and about 4000 now are undergoing treatment. More cases of pneumonia (370) than expected. 12 patients died yesterday at General Hospital, Fort McHenry, and 20 cases reported. 50 men discharged as cured. HC Blake offered help by several specialists in the city to treat patients. Lieut.-Col. John S. Fulton, secretary of the State Board of health, notified the city that the US Public Health Service will try to get Red Cross nurses and physicians to communities in need. Several communities report overworked doctors who can't attend all patients. Nurses at the Health Department are looking after patients at home or unable to get hospital beds.
